Short Course Description

If you're looking to work in hospitality as a bar tender, then this is the course for you!

This course incorporates basic skill requirements for bar operations through the delivery of three units of competency.

SITHFAB002 Provide responsible service of alcohol

The unit applies to all levels of sales personnel involved in the sale, service and promotional service of alcohol in licensed premises.

The unit also applies to security staff who monitor customer behaviour and to the licensee who is ultimately responsible for responsible service of alcohol (RSA) management.

SITHFAB001 Clean and tidy bar areas
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to clean bars and public areas, clear and clean glasses, and safely dispose of waste.

SITHFAB003 Operate a bar
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare a bar for service, take drink orders, prepare and serve alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and close the bar down.

Entry requirements or Pre-requisites

Pre-requisites: You must be 18 years or older to undertake the practical assessment required for this course. Further, you must complete the RSA component (SITHFAB002) of this course to be eligible to undertake SITHFAB003.

To enrol you must also hold the unit SITXFSA001 Use hygienic practices for food safety (or equivalent) as a pre-requisite to SITHFAB001 and SITHFAB003.

Documents issued on successful completion

On successful completion of this course you will be issued with a Statement of Attainment for the nationally recognised units of competency completed as part of the course.

In addition, if you complete the RSA unit will receive a NSW Department Industry – Interim Certificate. This certificate is valid for a period of 90-days, within which time you must attend a Service NSW centre with your interim certificate and 100 Point of Identification (listed on page 2 of the interim certificate) to have your final Photo Competency Card processed. This card will be issued by Service NSW and posted directly to you at the address provided on your student enrolment form.

Learning outcomes
The delivery of this course will cover the following elements:

  1. Sell or serve alcohol responsibly
  2. Assist customers to drink within appropriate limits
  3. Assess alcohol affected customers and identify those to whom sale or service must be refused
  4. Refuse to provide alcohol
  5. Clean bar and equipment
  6. Clean and maintain public areas
  7. Prepare bar for service
  8. Take drink orders
  9. Prepare and serve drinks
  10. Close down bar operations
  11. Work safely and reduce negative environmental impacts

Assessments Conducted
Formal assessment will be conducted in order to assess individual’s competency regarding the required skills and knowledge within the unit of competency.

The following assessments will be conducted as part of this short course:

  • Written knowledge assessment
  • Practical observation assessment
